…The mind’s delusion or seeing the world through the soul?

11 Feb

There was a long pool of vehicles ahead. I’ve been stuck in the same place for the past 25 mins. I shouldn’t have taken this particular road, I said to myself. The meteorogical station has just issued a warning because of the tropical cyclone and everyone was rushing to go home.

I, however, was in no hurry to go home. This weather – cloudy and rainy – is what makes me happy. I sit back in the car; Fix You of Coldplay playing on the radio, raindrops sliding down the window pane. I could write a whole page, ten pages, on that raindrop; for me it will become the symbol of everyday life whilst avoiding everyday life; it will stand for time and space, or space within time; it will be the world and still only a vanishing raindrop.

I could see the driver in the rearview mirror, with a small child behind the wheel. He seems all frustrated – he is most probably on his way to pick up his wife from the office and was stuck with his child. In front of me, a fat man in a van, wearing a blue shirt, which used to fit him maybe some years back, smoking his cigarette and trying to figure out what’s wrong – minutes later, he got out and walked a few metres ahead.

There was nothing on my mind at that moment; wanting to get out of the traffic seemed impossible. Both lanes were stuck. I focused my attention back to the rain – Raindrops  were blowing with the wind. They were making their way through the leaves of the trees on the corner of the road, and pooling together into endless puddles and miniature lakes on the ground.  As they were being poured upon the earth, they simply made the most of the moment. They splashed and danced and they had the ability to make a “dreary” day look alive and cheerful.

Then something happened, like in the movies when the ray of light from the sky shines down upon the main character and the choir sings in the background – except much less dramatic. A nice smile flashed and my eyes were locked to another pair of eyes with a twinkle. This made me smile – It’s amazing how a stranger out of nowhere can bring a smile without words. Soul connection, I reminded myself, beyond words, beyond time – just a beautiful feeling.

Just then the traffic started to move. I brushed aside the few strands of hair which the wind blew on my eyes and shifted gear to move ahead. Just then my phone rang. It was my friend, who was stuck in traffic too. We decided to go for a drink while waiting for this chaos of vehicles and people to subside.

Sitting in the lounge of the hotel, with a beautiful view of fading rays of sunlight, I could now relax. I closed my eyes and could feel the calmness of the moment. This feeling instantly died when we were joined by a few other people. All I could see were moving lips and gestures. Everything seemed so fake; luxuries confused as needs.  For all the technological advancements we’ve made, our ability to connect on a human level is miles away from it’s natural, primitive state. I find myself sinking into a secular mindset –  I could not fit in the moment nor in the conversation. There was something missing. I stood up and just said I would be back in a moment. Deep inside, I know I was not coming back. Settling the bill, I walk to the front of the building. The traffic has cleared and the roads and buildings were empty.

I took a cigarette from my bag and lit it after several attempts. I have never been good at lighting cigarettes. Taking the first puff inside, I leaned against the wet wall and took my high heels off after a whole day. My feet felt the cold pavement and it started to rain again. I felt the rain tickling on my face and everything feels real again!

I was free… and I just no longer fit in that world! Sometimes you connect to a stranger without uttering a word and disconnect with people you know despite the thousand words.

Note: The short stories on my blog do NOT reflect my life in any single way. The characters involved are entirely fictional and are just figments of my imagination.

A Secret Affair

6 Feb

Tackling love, betrayal and trust – The movie is all about a couple who are madly and deeply in love with each other. After two months of dating together, Anton proposed to Raffy. During the preparations for their upcoming wedding, Raffy, the fiancee, was pressured with all the comments she has been hearing from everybody and all the happenings in her life. Her confusion and fears led her to leaving Anton and becoming a run-away bride.

This is a really nice movie which depicts infidelity in relationships, which is so current nowadays. Infidelity is never a mistake, it’s just a choice which you make and you can never ever really trust that person again, even if the love is there – and as much as you want to fix the relationship, the damage has been done… and there’s really no coming back. Betrayal is like a poison. Despite all the efforts and considerations made, there will still be more misunderstandings, doubts and problems. There are some who can survive the infidelity and unfaithfulness. They are the ones who are strong enough to ignore the pain and disregard the doubts in their minds and hearts. When trust is broken, the relationship will never be the same again.

I love the ending…!

“Before I met you, I thought I had a perfect life. And you came into the picture and turned my life completely. you made me realize what true love is. You made me realize what happiness is.”

“Marriage is a sentence. A life sentence. It has to be served.”

“Betrayal, in all forms, is painful. It can make you go crazy. But we all have choices on how to deal with it. Do we just go away or stay?”

“Don’t confuse love with sex, sweetie.”

Taking things for granted…

15 Jan

Too often, we take things and people we have been blessed with in our life for granted. It’s the default mode we all go into. But like all things in life, we run into a bit of a paradox here. We want to stop taking things for granted but it’s so hard to do that because we’re wired to take things for granted.

We fail to enjoy the successes that have become part of our lives. We simply don’t take the time to enjoy the little things.

The little things, however, aren’t so little after all.

Never take things for granted...

The little things are that extra time you can spend with your loved ones, or the great story that they are telling during dinner or outing. Or that great mini vacation you just took. Or the things you have been able to acquire because of your success. The cars, the house, the toys, the gifts, etc… So often, we tend to take for granted people who comes into our life. They are here for a reason, for a moment! Appreciate it…

Sometimes the things that we take for granted go away. And it’s really hard to always carry around that feeling we get when we lose something big in our lives, that feeling of “I shouldn’t have taken it for granted”.

Slow down a bit and smell the roses. Take the time to enjoy the little things. Observe the fine details. Take the time to journal the experience. Spend time with the people who you feel happy with.

Today, take the time to slow down. Even if it is for 5 minutes. Close your eyes. Take a deep breaths to clear your mind, and think about everything and people you have been blessed with in your life. Think about what makes you happy, think about what you have been blessed with… Be grateful for all those things!

I think that you will find a deeper appreciation for everything in your life.

Life… is fragile, it’s precious, it’s short …enjoy it!!

Learn to appreciate what you have before time makes you appreciate what you had.

Little Pleasures Of My Life…

11 Jan

They say the best things in life are free.  I always believed that the pleasures of life lie in the small things that we do, not the big things. Just a little dose of inspiration which I had and I jotted down some of the little things which can sometimes make me really happy:

  • My parents’ smiles;
  • Cuddling with my cats;
  • Long drives to unknown destinations or night time drives;
  • Sitting down and watching the rain near a splendid mountain view;
  • Getting drenched in the rain;
  • The anticipation & hype just before boarding the plane for a long holiday;
  • Clocking your card out of work just before a weekend off/days off;
  • Finally laying in bed under the comfy, freshly washed bed sheet after a hard day at work;
  • The smell of gasoline;
  • Laying on the beach, watching the stars & listening to waves crashing on the shore;
  • Getting a message right away after thinking about someone;
  • Watching the sunset;
  • The other side of the pillow;
  • Driving over little hills and getting the mini roller in your stomach;
  • The joy of unpacking gifts;
  • Watching your payslip at the end of the month;
  • Smell of perfume/body lotion which reminds you of someone or your childhood;
  • Waking up in the middle of the night and realising you have long hours to sleep;
  • A compliment/reward/blessing;
  • Feeling the cold sand on your feet at night;
  • Spontaneous adventures: A phone call, jump in the car and just drive!
  • A nice swim;
  • A good conversation and a nice laugh;
  • Holding hands with someone you love;
  • Get a hug from someone by surprise, just when you need it most;
  • Bringing a smile on someone’s face;
  • Just sitting and observing people;
  • Succeed in doing something which people say you can’t do;
  • Enjoying a nice movie under the quilt on a rainy day;
  • Lighting scented candles and just relaxing with some soft music!

Sometimes, we have to just forget about the big things which we THINK will make us happy. Sometimes we have to be happy with what we have, with our surroundings, with people who cares to be in your life… rather than waste our time and effort with what we don’t have and over people who don’t care.

Smile that perfect smile 🙂 Life’s good!

Living beyond your feelings!

23 Oct

This morning while having a cup of tea and having a discussion with my dad, I learnt from him that you can’t be held responsible for anybody’s feelings, you are responsible only for yours and your own actions.

“People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”  –Abraham Lincoln

The average person has 70,000 thoughts every day, and many of those thoughts trigger a corresponding emotion. No wonder so many of us often feel like we’re controlled by our emotions. Our lives would be much improved if we controlled them. Emotions, feelings… We have all felt it, at each step of our lives.

God gave us emotions on purpose. I believe our emotions play a vital role in living happy, healthy, successful lives. All emotions, from love and joy to anger and fear, have an important part to play in understanding ourselves and others. But this diversity of feelings is meant to complement our life, not determine it!

We need some emotion to motivate us, but it needs to be the right emotion at the right time applied in the right way. The more emotional we become, the stupider we become. This is because emotions want us to react blindly and physically rather than to think or be objective and rational. Being objective and rational when a lion was attacking wouldn’t have been great from an evolutionary point of view – because it would have slowed us down. But much of modern life needs measured calm thought rather than blind and sloppy emotional responses.

Knowing what emotion you are feeling is essential. Identifying the truth as to why you are feeling it means you are that much closer to doing something about it and to act upon it. No one can make you feel a certain emotion at any given moment. In just the same way, you can’t control the emotions another person feels. Taking responsibility for your emotions, and more importantly, not taking responsibility for anybody else’s is a step in ending unhappy relationship. Emotions are also determinants of your health state and the way you look. Cultivate your emotions and you’ll be healthy! 😉

A new day!

9 Jun

There comes a time when you must stand alone.

You must feel confident enough within yourself to follow your own dreams.You must be willing to make sacrifices.

You must be capable of changing and rearranging your priorities so that your final goal can be achieved.

Sometimes, familiarity and comfort need to be challenged.

There are times when you must take a few extra chances and create your own realities.

Be strong enough to at least try to make your life better.

Be confident enough that you won’t settle for a compromise just to get by.

Appreciate yourself by allowing yourself the opportunities to grow, develop, and find your true sense of purpose in this life.

Don’t stand in someone else’s shadow when it’s your sunlight that should lead the way.
